Tapered Tubing & Bump Tubing

Duke Extrusion manufactures custom tapered tubing and bump tubing that matches your unique requirements. The inside diameters (IDs) and outside diameters (ODs) of our tapered tube and bump tubing products can be varied along the length of the tube. We can taper both single and multiple lumen tubing.

Tapered Tube

Tapered tubing is ideal for certain catheter applications. Neurovascular and microcatheters usually depend on a larger proximal diameter to increase the pushability of the device, while a smaller distal end provides improved performance and deliverability. Duke Extrusion tapered tube maintains both beneficial qualities.

Tapered Tube Drug Delivery Catheters

Tapered medical tubing is common in various drug delivery catheters, such as:

  • Peripherally Inserted Catheters (PICC Lines)
  • Central Venous Catheters (CVC’s)

Implant delivery catheters also utilize tapered tubing where the implant is loaded into a larger diameter distal end. The remainder of the catheter has a smaller diameter to improve navigation in small vasculature. This lessens trauma to the patient while increasing the patient population that can be treated. These types of tapered tubing catheters are used in transcatheter aortic valve implantation and replacement procedures (TAVI and TAVR).

Tapered Tubing Variable Features

Taper tubing benefits from a variable cross-sectional profile over the length of the tubing. Our  single lumen taper tubes allow the ID and OD to be varied so that:

  1. The wall thickness is maintained while the ID and OD change.
  2. The wall thickness also varies as the ID and OD change.
  3. The wall thickness varies while the ID or the OD changes.

Additionally, IDs/ODs and cross-sections should be specified at the large and small portions. The transition length of the taper should also be defined; taper length can vary from less than 1/2” up to 4”, depending on several factors, including material type.

In addition to single lumen tapered tubes, Duke Extrusion manufactures multi-lumen tapered tubing products with up to four lumens, in a variety of cross-sections.

Bump Tubing

The process of producing bump tube is the same as producing tapered tube. The extrusion is pulled at a variable rate while controlling the screw speed and air pressure with a closed-loop feedback controller. The cutter is integrated with the puller so that the precise location of the bump or taper can be programmed. A multi-axis laser micrometer is used to measure bump tubing dimensions continuously.

Custom Tapered Tubing & Bump Tubing to Match YOUR Specifications

Duke Extrusion can create custom tapered tube and bump tube from a broad range of materials. Tapered tubing can be combined with co-extrusion to create custom tubing, which provides applicable benefits for specific purposes due to the combined properties of the two differing materials. For example, one channel of a multi-lumen taper tube can be a different color or a different polymer. Another configuration is single lumen taper or bump tubing with varied materials on the inner and outer layers. This tube-on-tube, or multi-layer, co-extrusion can be tapered along the length.

We have the capabilities to combine these processes with multi-lumen extrusion to create custom tapered tubing and bump tubing with up to four individual lumens.

We can combine tapered tubing with braiding or coiled tubing in the wall of the extrusion to produce reinforced tubing with a variable profile.

However, there are material-dependent limitations to the degree of change that can be processed. Duke Extrusion can make specific recommendations to achieve your design goals, or we can provide a quote to meet your exact specification.

Areas of application for tapered tubing and bump tubing include variable stiffness catheters and catheters with multiple ports for ease of connections to luer fittings and extension lines.
